Wir erleben die Berge und die Wüste Sinai rund um St. Katharine und lernen die Bewohner, die Beduinen, kennen.
Wir reisen als Gruppe, meditieren und stimmen uns immer wieder auf unsere Umgebung und ihre Bewohner ein und tauschen uns darüber aus.

Für jede/jeden steht ein Kamel zur Verfügung, auf dem wir reiten können oder das nur unser Gepäck trägt. Wir übernachten unter dem Sternenzelt in unserem Schlafsack, Matratzen und Decken werden zur Verfügung gestellt, abends wird für uns am Feuer gekocht.

9.Tag und 10. Tag (4.5 + 5.5)
Kameltour
am 10. Tag abends zurück ins Bedouin Camp.
Abendessen und Übernachtung im Bedouin Camp.
Die Reise endet mit dem Frühstück am 6.5.

Was uns erwartet
Auf dieser Reise begegnen wir den Beduinen direkt und live und wir leben ein bisschen ihr einfaches Leben in Einklang mit der Natur. Bitte seid daher auf absoluten Komfortverzicht vorbereitet. Wir übernachten in einfachen Camps, schlafen auf dünnen Matratzen, es gibt nicht immer warme Duschen. Dafür erleben wir die unnachahmliche Gastfreundschaft, die Ruhe, Teetrinken am Feuer und einfach nur Sein zu dürfen.

Please read the updated call:

We are trying to organize a couple of days next weekend at the Sheikh
Sina Ecolodge in Ste. Katerine to brainstorm on how we can support the
effort to revitalize tourism in Egypt in general, and in Sinai in
particular.

This would be starting on the evening of March 3, but mainly March 4
and 5 (Friday-Saturday).

The primary objective is to come up with concrete steps, even if just
on a small scale, to help capitalizing on this positive spirit taking
over the country right now, and in which we know some tourists would
like to participate first hand.

We propose to use the weekend in Sheikh Sina for two main things:

- Review together our proposal for a 1 week to 10 days travel Plan in
Egypt- what specific activities could be included.
- Agree on how we can all promote this Plan through our networks,
social sites, business contacts, etc..

To facilitate things, we will have a strawman proposal for this travel
plan, that we will then spend time discussing, elaborating, changing,
etc.. We think this travel plan will focus on three main themes:

1- General, standars site seeing. For example, no one who has never
been to Egypt before will want to not see the Pyramids or Islamic
Cairo..
2- Specific activities focused on the Revolution: walks in Tahreer
with people who were there for the demonstrations; talks or lectures;
celebratory events..
3- Hikes, meditation sessions, and local cultural activities in Sinai,
based out of Sheikh Sina.

As I said, we will spend time refining this together, and
incorporating everyone’s ideas in it, then agree on how best to
promote and disseminate it.

What you would do:
1- First, just by joining the weekend, you already would be doing
something to help revitalize tourism there. So even if you just enjoy
your time and do nothing else, just going is a positive first step.
2- Participate in the discussions, as mentioned above.
3- Agree on how each of us can promote this Plan, even if only by a
simple email to our contacts.

Additionally, those who wish to participate further can propose to
conduct themselves some of the activities such as walks etc. that we
agree on in the travel Plan.

Of course this would also be a fun weekend, including hikes or even
meditation sessions for those who like to participate.

The cost is in the vicinity of 350 EGP per person for accommodation
and food, excluding transportation to and from Sheikh Sina.

main activities would be on Friday and Saturday morning, but ideally
if you could get there by Thursday evening, that would be best, but
not essential.

Tentative schedule:

24.2
Arrive Thursday evening at the Ecolodge.
Over dinner collect questions and initial ideas, decide on topics or questions we want to discuss on Friday.

25.2
Breakfast at the Ecolodge.
In small groups work on different questions.
Some of us might want to stay at the Ecolodge and continue discussions there.
Others might want to use the energy of the hike up to Mt. Moses
to intensify our new visions.
Hikers will be back for tea and dinner at the Ecolodge.

26.2
Breakfast at the Ecolodge.
Collect results from discussions on Friday and come up with concrete actions to do.
Build symbols (e.g., small stone figures) to start manifesting our
intentions, plans.
Event ends after lunch.

Accomodation and costs:

There are 14 beds in double and triple rooms available at the Ecolodge.
Around 10 people can sleep in their own sleeping bags/blankets in
the arisha, which will also be our ‘workshop’ room.
At this time of year it is still quite cold in the mountains, as the
Ecolodge is situated at 1700 m elevation.
Sleeping outside will probably be too cold.

The total cost for food and accomodation and an extra guide to look after us from
Thursday evening to Saturday after lunch will be:
320 LE for shared room
280 LE for place in arisha with own sleeping bag.

Besteigung des Katharinenberges:
Aufbruch um ca. 6.00 Uhr morgens, ca. 4 Stunden Aufstieg, Mittagspause auf dem Gipfel. Bei sehr klarem Wetter kann man den Golf von Aqaba auf der einen sowie den Golf von Suez auf der anderen Seite in der Ferne sehen. Um ca. 14.00 Uhr Beginn des Abstiegs.

Jeep-Tour nach Ain Hudra und Wanderung durch den White Canyon:
Nach dem Frühstück um ca. 9.00 Uhr werden wir von einem Jeep abgeholt. Nach ca. einer Stunde Fahrt erreichen wir den Einstieg zur Oase. Ca. 45 Minuten Wanderung zur Oase. Besichtigung und Mittag. Nach einem Tee Wanderung durch den White Canyon zurück zur Straße. Mit dem Jeep zurück zur Ecolodge.

Wanderung zum Wadi Nasb
Wir beginnen den Ausflug um ca. 8.00 Uhr direkt bei der Ecolodge. Wir wandern durch verschiedene Täler, erst mit einer weiten Aussicht, dann immer schmaler und felsiger werdend. Mittagspause mit Tee am Feuer auf dem Weg. An unserem Ziel dem malerischen Wadi Nasb erwartet uns ein Jeep, der uns zurück zur Ecolodge bringt.
Kosten: je nach Teilnehmerzahl 30-50 Euro

Handarbeitsworkshop
Wir gehen zum nahe gelegenen Beduinendorf. Dort erwartet uns Salha und weitere Frauen aus ihrer Familie. Sie zeigen uns Handarbeitsstücke an denen Sie gerade arbeiten. Wir haben kleine Beutel, Stickgarn sowie Perlen mitgebracht. Beim Tee bringen uns die Beduinenfrauen ihre Stichtechnik bei.

Awad Hussein - Bedouin Artist

The jewellery he is making was traditionally worn daily by the bedouin women. Pieces of his work completed the traditional clothing of bedouin women of the Jebaliya tribe.

The whole process of designing one of his pieces is documented in one of my facebook albums.

Earlier this year I observed two bedouin women making a rug.
There are a lot of bedouin women these days using big fixed looms to make rugs. These two women showed me the way it was done in the old days when the movable loom was setup wherever it was needed.

First the length and width of the future rug are measured. The four poles are rammed into the gravel floor with stones that can always be found in this region. The stones also serve as platforms to hold the loom sticks.

Then the first strings of wool are strung over the whole lengths of the loom and every second string is seperated.

The bedouin women choose the colors of the wools strings carefully until finally the whole wool frame is ready.

Fixing knotes are tied at one end of the frame and then the actual weaving can start.

The upper strings have to be separeted from the lower strings after each passing of the weaving wood.

After a few moments the pattern of the rug is visible.

And after a few days with a couple of hours work each day a beautiful rug is created.

On our last day we got up at 4am for a lesson in star signs, we saw also a good number of shooting stars and observed Venus coming up over the mountain. Spectacular!

You can just enjoy the peace and beauty of the place or take part in one or more of the following activities:

Thursday night: Making fateer
Friday morning: 2-3 hour walk to Wadi El Frush including tea on the fire
Friday afternoon: „The camels in the life of the bedouin“ or „Bedouin Handicraft“

Transport from St. Katharine to or from the ecolodge is 50 LE per jeep.
Fullboard (dinner, room, breakfast, lunch) in the ecolodge is 135 LE.
The activities and the walk are each 200 LE, which can be shared, e.g. 50 LE per person if you are four.
